As generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and specialized coding assistants become ubiquitous, employees are integrating these technologies into their daily workflows at a record pace. However, this adoption is frequently happening without the knowledge or approval of IT departments, creating a massive visibility gap that cybercriminals are eager to exploit.

For small business owners, the appeal of AI is obvious: it promises to level the playing field against larger competitors by boosting productivity and automating tedious tasks. Yet, according to recent industry research, the global cost of cybercrime is projected to reach $12.2 trillion annually by 2031. A significant portion of this risk stems from the unmanaged use of emerging technologies. When an employee pastes proprietary business information—such as financial spreadsheets, client lists, or sensitive legal contracts—into a public AI prompt, that data essentially becomes part of the public domain.

This creates several layers of risk for SMBs:

  • Intellectual Property Leakage: Trade secrets or unique business processes can be ingested by the model and potentially surfaced in response to queries from competitors.
  • Loss of Data Sovereignty: Once data is uploaded to a public AI cloud, the business loses the ability to delete or manage that data according to internal retention policies.

As we move beyond simple chatbots, the next frontier is Agentic Automation. Unlike traditional automation, which follows a rigid “if-this-then-that” logic, AI agents can perceive their environment, reason through complex goals, and take autonomous actions.
